JNU School of Life Sciences (SLS) was established on the basis of a report prepared by a working group headed by Prof. M.S. Swaminathan in the year 1970. The School stands today as a unique institution in the country where multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching and research in life sciences have established permanent roots. The uniqueness of the School essentially lies in the fact that within the School’s faculty there are experts and active researchers representing almost all areas of modern biology. JNU School of Physical Sciences (SPS) is one of the leading departments of India in terms of research and teaching in physical sciences. The SPS faculty has made significant contributions to novel interdisciplinary areas interfacing physics, chemistry and mathematics, in addition to the more traditional areas of physics. The School has well-developed computing facilities and well-equipped laboratories. The research emphasis is on topics of Chemical Physics, Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry, Computational Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Disordered Systems, Granular Materials, Mathematical Physics, Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Probability Measure, Quantum Chaos, Quantum Optics, Statistical Nuclear Physics, and String Theory. Experimental areas include Complex Fluids, Supra-molecular Chemistry, Materials Science, Superconductivity, Magnetism, Nonlinear Optics, Semiconductors, Polymers and Nanoparticle Physics, and Ultrafast Photophysical Processes in Bio and Nano-materials.

JNU School of Social Sciences was established in 1970 and now has the largest faculty in the university. From the beginning an attempt has been made here to dismantle the narrow disciplinary compartments found in traditional academic structures, and this objective can be seen reflected even in the unusual appointment pattern. Thus, one may find a linguist or an anthropologist in the Centre for Historical Studies; or a demographer and an economist along with geologists or geographers in the Centre for the Study of Regional Development; an economist, a psychologist, a sociologist and a historian in the Centre for Educational Studies.

The University Science Instrumentation Center was established in Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1979 under the scheme of UGC for providing in-house facilities of Design / development / fabrication and maintenance of sophisticated scientific instruments and the training of researchers / teachers and technical staff of the University involved in the technical activities.
